Today marks National Grilled Cheese Day, and what better way to celebrate than to take your date out for a gourmet version of this classic sandwich? We’ve compiled a list of the best locations for a Grilled Cheese across the country, and we’re happy to share it with you here:
Los Angeles: In LA, we are lucky enough to have an entire cook-off dedicated to Grilled Cheese, and it just so happens that the Grilled Cheese Invitational is scheduled for Sunday, April 28th from 11am-6pm at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. Amateur and professional chefs come together to compete side-by-side in hopes of becoming the true Grilled Cheese Champion. Tickets are $15.00 each, and can be purchased at the official event website. You can also find details on Twitter: @grilldcheez. We can’t think of a tastier way to spend a day together!
New York: The Cannibal, 113 E. 29th St. Voted the Best Grilled Cheese in New York by Eater NY, the fixings include Vermont cheddar, gruyere, bacon and pork belly. Another plus: This place has a lot of unique beer on tap (for the 21+ crowd, of course). Check out their site here or on Twitter: @cannibalnyc.
Chicago: Silver Cloud Bar and Grill, 1700 N. Damen Ave. This restaurant is known for its comfort food, and last year they made Huffington Post’s list of Chicago’s Best Grilled Cheese Sandwiches. Served with a side of Campbell’s Tomato Soup, this combo has “comfort” written all over it. Perfect for a date on a chilly spring day! Check out their website here or follow them on Twitter: @SilverCloudChi.
Philadelphia: South Philadelphia Tap Room, 1509 Mifflin St. In a city best known for their cheese steak, this sandwich has big shoes to fill. Part of Food and Wine’s Best Grilled Cheese in the U.S. list, chef Scott Schroeder starts with local Bakers Street white bread, adds Lancaster County smoked cheddar, sharp provolone, and American cheese, then coats the sandwich with garlic-herb butter before griddling it until dark and crispy. Heaven! Website or Twitter: @SPTapRoom.
San Francisco: The American Grilled Cheese Kitchen, 1 South Park St. Also making Food and Wine’s list of Best Grilled Cheese in the U.S., chef Heidi Gibson won the National Grilled Cheese Invitational and ditched her career as an engineer to open this shop in the city. There are so many choices on the menu, you have to see it for yourself. Website or Twitter: @theamericansf
Boston: Roxy’s Gourmet Grilled Cheese, Cleveland Circle (see website for all locations). With menu items like the Mac and Chorizo sandwich, this is not your ordinary grilled cheese joint. This restaurant was featured on The Food Network’s ‘The Great Food Truck Race’ (yes, it’s a food truck) and was listed on CBS Boston’s list of Best Grilled Cheeses. Website or Twitter: @roxysgrilledchz.
Denver: Rackhouse Pub, 208 S. Kalamath St. The menu describes it as the ‘Perfect Grilled Cheese,’ and that seems pretty accurate to us! The Parmesan-crusted bread is laden with brie, cheddar, Swiss and tomato. Throw in an extra dollar to add on bacon or ham and voila! You have yourself a Grilled Cheese that topped the Huffington Post’s list of Denver’s Best Grilled Cheese . Website or Twitter: @RackhousePub.
Austin: Blue Star Cafeteria, 4800 Burnet Rd. Thanks to blogger Jenna of Eat, Live, Run for tipping us off to this little Grilled Cheese gem. This sandwich is made of four different types of cheese (swiss, provolone, cheddar and gorgonzola), piled on sourdough and served with apple & dried fruit chutney and dijon mustard. As Jenna says, “it’s worth every single last crumb.” Check out their website here, or follow them on Twitter: @bluestaraustin.
